Much to Mercy's shock she's not the only one keeping secrets.

In Short: This is a suspenseful murder mystery book that at times was a little scary.

Pros: This book was suspenseful and kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next.

Cons: Although the main character (Mercy) was likable enough most of the characters were actually very unlikable. Some of the characters actions didn't make any sense and left me feeling frustrated.

Parent's Guide: This book contains violence/abduction/rape and swearing. This book is for adults only.

 Author Bio: “Once Bitten, Twice Die” is the debut novel from Antony J. Stanton. The book is the first of ‘The Blood of the Infected’ series, in the ‘post-apocalyptic action thriller’ genre. Stanton was born in London in 1970. Even as a child he always dreamed of becoming a published author, and he started to write a book. But, having watched the film ‘Top Gun,’ he was swayed into a becoming a military pilot. After no more than a glancing blow of a career in the British Royal Air Force he decided that his long term future lay elsewhere and he became a commercial pilot and remains thus to this day. Hence much of this trilogy was written all around the world, generally at unsociable times when jet-lag meant that normal people were asleep. During a holiday with three friends, a bet was made amongst them. Each had a task to fulfil within the year – Stanton’s was to write a book. A little late, but five years on and his challenge has been completed. Three times. His period spent in the RAF helped him write the military survival aspects of this book, and a kidnapping incident in Kazakhstan and shooting in Ghana, amongst other ‘adventures’, provided him with a dark well of experience to draw from. Chapter One begins thusly: Anthony Falcone had been waiting thirteen years for the opportunity that he now had. He crouched down behind a blue van and carefully scanned the area to make sure none of the guards had spotted him. He tried the doors to several cars before finding an unlocked SUV, and he was in luck with this one. There was a canvas tarp on the floor in the back along with a variety of camping gear, and after crawling in Anthony was able to conceal himself under the tarp quite effectively. Visiting hours at the Arizona State Mental Hospital on the corner of Van Buren and 24th Street were almost over and he wouldn't have long to wait before he would be out the gates. He grew up on the streets of Phoenix and knew places to hide where no one would ever think to look for him, regardless of how many years had passed. He tangibly smelled his impending freedom and felt a rush go to his head. “Calm down,” Tony whispered to himself. “I’ve waited a long time for this chance and I can’t blow it now.”

It was difficult for Tony to restrain his excitement, but he needed to stay motionless in order to avoid being discovered. He knew that if the owner of the SUV didn't come soon, the attendant’s body he had left in the bathroom would be discovered and the gates would automatically be closed the instant the alarms went off. If they caught him, he wouldn’t get another chance like this, and then he would be trapped forever.

Tony struggled to keep his breathing shallow and silent when he heard footsteps approaching the passenger door. The door opened and he felt the SUV’s springs give as someone of substantial weight slid into the driver's seat, click the seat belt on, and start the engine. Loud country music blasted through the speakers as soon as the engine kicked in and, for a split second, Tony panicked as he misinterpreted the music for the hospital sirens starting up. He mindlessly tensed up in readiness to attack the unsuspecting driver when reality kicked in, just in time to avoid disaster. Gradually he relaxed as the SUV began to roll out of the parking lot and toward the gates that led to his freedom.

The vehicle pulled up in front of the guard booth and Tony heard the guard laughing and joking with the driver. He quietly began whispering over and over to himself, “Don’t let them look back here; don’t let them find me.” Sweat trickled into his eyes and he was sure that they could smell his fear.

When the SUV began to move forward once again Tony had to suppress his immense relief. Now all he had to do was to wait for the right opportunity to leave the vehicle without being seen. He didn't want anyone reporting where he was since he knew he had scores to settle before his probable death. If his father didn’t have him killed first, he would kill himself before he allowed anyone to take him back to that horrible place where his father had secured his imprisonment.

Description: This is a short story about an indie-author driven mad by a negative review from a villainous reviewer.

In Short: If you enjoy short stories and revenge thriller type genres you should give this book a read. It is exciting yet suspenseful, and witty yet dark.

Pros: This short story is very well written and fast and fun to read. I would definitely read more by this author. Even though it is short there is a lot of character development for our "protagonist" who is a struggling author. We get to know him through watching his daily life and struggle to promote his books. He is a very sympathetic character and I felt for him when the reviewer appeared and things escalated. The story is thought provoking. The ending even left me wondering, so I translated the two Ukrainian words and was pretty shocked! This short story had a killer ending. The author was really driven mad!  

Cons: I have no notable issues with this book.

Parent's Guide: Mostly clean. This story contains themes of blackmail and violence. No gore or extended graphic scenes. No swearing or sex.

Description: Set in both Mexico and Arizona this story takes a while ride that begins with good ol' Andy watching a woman's bag for her. When she disappears and he is left holding her mysterious bag he is unwittingly thrown into another adventure looking for two missing women. The mystery takes deadly turns and Andy and his friends find themselves trying to not only find the missing women but also reunite stolen children with their family all while avoiding a very dangerous and powerful person.

In Short: This is a great series for mystery novel lovers. I found "Dizzy in Durango" to be more of a suspenseful thriller than the previous book. If you are looking for a very well written series with realistic characters look no further. Enjoy a good mystery while watching the slow natural development of Andy and Rachel's relationship and Andy's professional journey as a musician.

Another stunning tale by D.R. Ransdell.

Pros: Even though these books are part of a series they can be read alone! I read book 2, "IslandCasualty" before this one and absolutely loved it! It was also our Book of theMonth in July! That book gave me the background on Rachel and Andy and their relationship but pertinent details from past books are explained in this story, so you wont miss out. Although these books are all stand-alones if the series appeals to you, read it in order, you wont regret it! The story in this book was very different from "Island Casualty", showing that Andy's life is absolutely full of crazy twists and turns. The poor guy can't seem to go anywhere without murder following him. But it isn't all madness and peril for him! In this installment he auditions for a symphony and makes plans to start a life closer to his friend, lover and could-be-something-more, Rachel.

These books are incredibly detailed. Every setting is so well described that you feel like you are actually there. The cultures of the people in these places are also well highlighted. In this story you see a spotlight shone onto Machismo culture.    

Cons: I have no notable issues with this book.
