(REVIEW) A Merciful Death by Kendra Elliot

A Merciful Death

(Mercy Kelpatrick Book 1)

Author: Kendra Elliot
Category: Mystery & Suspense
Suitable for: Adults
My Rating: 4 Stars
Format Read for Review: Kindle
Pages: 353

Description:  Mercy is an FBI agent that is sent on an assignment to investigate multiple murders. The town in which the murders occur just happens to be the town that Mercy grew up in. Mercy grew up in a small town with a family of disaster preppers. A tragic event happens and Mercy's father kicked her out of the home. Mercy struggles with keeping the secret of her past and seeing her family members for the first time since then, while also trying to solve the murders. Much to Mercy's shock she's not the only one keeping secrets.

In Short: This is a suspenseful murder mystery book that at times was a little scary.

Pros: This book was suspenseful and kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next.

Cons: Although the main character (Mercy) was likable enough most of the characters were actually very unlikable. Some of the characters actions didn't make any sense and left me feeling frustrated.

Parent's Guide: This book contains violence/abduction/rape and swearing. This book is for adults only.

Interview with Glynis Astie

Hello wonderful reader. How's it going?

I personally have been swamped with a crazy summer semester on top of working 36 weekly (unpaid) hours at the hospital. Which is why there hasn't been a review in a hot minute. But I promise I have a few reviews in the works at the moment so stay tuned.

One fun thing I've been up to is chatting with Glynis Astie the fabulous rom-com writer. You may have seen my Review of her novel Gamer Girl back in May. This is a fantastic 5* book and Book of the Month winner so you can imagine my excitement when she agreed to do an interview with me!

Enjoy,

Interview with Glynis Astie

Firstly I would like to congratulate you on a wonderful book. Gamer Girl blew my mind. I thought the dialogue was absolutely fantastic. From the characters voices, to their attitudes, to the thoughtfulness of their words and the immersive feel of the conversations. Can you tell me a little bit about your process of writing dialogue?

Thank you so much, O! I really enjoyed writing Gamer Girl. I remember having trouble writing dialogue for my first book, French Twist. When I saw the words on paper, I felt this bizarre need for everything to be formal, as though I were handing in a research paper to a professor. (Seriously, I didn’t use contractions or slangnot even the occasional swear word. It sounded totally off!) Thankfully, I received early feedback that my dialogue sounded stilted. From then on, I made it a regular practice to read what I wrote out loud, which made it easy to see where I needed to make corrections. It was a lot of fun to add different voices and intonations while I read (my cats were highly entertained) and I did my best to add descriptors to capture these nuances for the reader.

I suspected you might do that. It really does give it an authentic feel!

When you imagine Morgan do you have a celebrity doppelganger in mind for him? I'm sure my viewers would appreciate the visual ;)

It’s funny, but before you posed this question, I hadn’t really thought about it. All of my other books are based on my life, so I’ve never had to imagine what my characters look like. Although I was asked once who would play the major characters in movies of my French Twist series and it was fun to think about, but that’s a story for another time. After I read your question, I searched Pinterest and eventually struck gold. Sam Claflin would make a great Morgan—he’s GORGEOUS, he can play to both Morgan’s goofy and serious sides AND we already know he can rock an American accent. Thanks for prompting me to search for the visual, O!

As the title suggested, our protagonist Meri is a gamer girl. I have to say I loved the back story for that it was very well thought out and meaningful, but I digress. So, are you also a gamer?

I have something very sad to tell you, O. I have NO gaming skills. None whatsoever. I wish I did, because I love video games, but I’m missing the necessary hand-eye coordination. My youngest surpassed my skill level when he was about three. Every once in a while, he’ll ask me to play, but becomes frustrated because I can’t keep up. (And I go through lives like they’re going out of style.)

I was actually inspired to write Gamer Girl after watching a video game documentary with my husband. I really liked the idea of a character leading two lives—one inside the game and one outside—and that these two lives could converge in the most interesting ways.

Congratulations on your recent release of French Roast. I hope I get to read it very soon. What similarities are there between Gamer Girl and the French Twist series?

Thank you, O! There are certainly some similarities between the two. Meri and Sydney both lack confidence, though for different reasons and they show this in different ways. Meri is a lot better at covering up her insecurities than Sydney. Sydney (who is my alter ego) has a tendency to catastrophize and to say some seriously crazy things. My heroes are certainly swoon-worthy, although Morgan is a lot more flawed than Louis. (Knowing my husband would be reading how I portrayed him as Louis, I had to be on my best behavior.) Both books also have a bevy of side characters, including a wise cracking older character who often becomes a favorite of readers. Grams was completely fictional—just an amalgam of old Jewish lady stereotypes coupled with my imagination—while Teddy was based on my father. I’ve been told by my siblings that I captured him perfectly, and I’m extremely proud of this. If only he had lived to read my tribute to him. (It’s a given he would have given me a list of corrections, but it would have been a wonderful conversation.)

What time frame do the 4 books of the French Twist Series cover?

The first book begins just as I met my husband and the last book ends ten years later. These books were a joy to write, although the last one was bittersweet as it dealt with a very difficult time in my life. In the end, writing the last installment was very healing for me and I’m incredibly proud of the result.

Tell me about your inspiration for the French Twist series and about how much of the story would you say is based on reality?

About a year after my second son was born, I had a dream that I wrote a book about how I met and married my husband in six months. The idea was so foreign to me as I had never imagined writing a book. I had decided to stay home with my boys, so I had the time and decided to give it a whirl. I wrote the first book in about three months and was very pleased with the results. (I have learned a lot since then and just may go back to spruce it up!) I would say about seventy-five percent of the first book is based on reality, with the total dropping to about sixty percent for the next two and coming back to seventy-five percent for the last one. In most cases, the events are accurate, but the timeline has been changed. I’m not quite sure how this happened, but the change in chronology helped the story progress in a more digestible manner.

Are you currently writing anything?

I’m a creature of habit, O. I write in the fall, edit in the winter, release in the spring, and take the summer off. I will be thrilled to spend the summer with my boys, and when the fall rolls around, I will be starting my next book, which is going to be a bit of a departure for me. I plan to tell the story from three different points of view and in a rather unique manner. That’s all I can tell you for now, but keep your eyes peeled over the summer for more details!

Oh, I love that routine! I hope you guys have a fantastic summer and I will keep my eyes peeled!
Thank you so much for chatting with me. It was truly a pleasure and I look forward to reading more of your books.

HEY DOORMAN VIII (REVIEW) #ShortReadsSaturdays

HEY DOORMAN VIII:

True Tales of an Uncommon Bouncer in Los Angeles

Author: John P. Kildemm
Category: Short Story Anthology, Nonfiction, Narratives, Political, Humor, Entertainment
Suitable for: Adults
My Rating: 3.5 Stars
Format Read for Review: Kindle copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Pages: 36

Description: A series of short stories based on the author's experiences as a bouncer for a Los Angeles night club. He has had some crazy experiences and he shares these short tales with a lot of thought and wit.

In Short: This short book definitely resonates the post-election angst that many Americans are currently feeling and expressing. If you enjoy humorous short stories based on the dark reality of nightlife that draw comparisons mocking the rhetoric of Trump's campaign you will like this book. But if you are a Trump supporter you could be upset by many of the comments made in this book, and I would suggest passing on it.

Pros: This book is very interesting and really more of a 3.75 Stars Rating. It gives you a fantastic view of Los Angeles club culture. These stories are quick, fun to read, smart and humorous. Some of the stories or commentary were so funny that I laughed out loud! It was like watching a TV show about a bouncer who encounters some pretty wild people and then throws jokes onto it. Many of the stories were very exciting, action packed, and entertaining. Some of the stories featured very violent characters and it made the story quite scary. Very well written anthology of unique narratives.

Cons: The amount of cynicism was a downer for me at times, fortunately there was humor too or I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did. Some of the pop culture references went over my head and left me lost. At times I thought some of the stories were too negative and based on just interpersonal issues that I didn't think were very important or entertaining. For example the narrator explained how he didn't like a particular man's name so he chose to call him by a name that he created to insult him. It came across as a bit disrespectful to me. I wish the book had been longer because there were many stories that I did enjoy and would have liked to read more.

Parent's Guide: This book contains graphic language, swearing, violence, sexual themes. I suggest only adult readers.

Upcoming Sci-Fi Release + FREE BOOK!

This post contains affiliate links to Amazon.

Edgy Sci-Fi Dystopian Love Story
by the very talented D. L. Orton.
I'll be reading it, will you?

If someone took everything you live for, how far would you go to get it back?

CROSSING IN TIME

When offered a one-way trip to the past, Iz sacrifices everything for a chance to change her dystopian future—and see her murdered lover one last time.

After a perilous journey through a black hole, she wakes up on a tropical beach, buck naked and mortally wounded—but twenty years younger! With only hours to live, she must convince an enraptured but skeptical twenty-something guy to fix their future relationship and thereby save the planet (no one is quite sure why.)

But it's easier said than done, as success means losing him to a brainy, smart-mouthed bombshell (her younger self), and that's a heartbreaker, save the world or not.

Across the infinite expanse of space and time, love endures...

(Unfortunately, it’s not going to be enough.)

FALL INTO THIS EDGY, action-packed, darkly comedic, dystopian love story, and be prepared to encounter a finicky time machine, a mysterious seashell, and a very clever dog (some sex, some swearing, some violence, but no vampires and absolutely no ditzes.)

When a faulty time machine deposits Diego in a towering evergreen, he knows he's in the wrong place—but has no idea he's in the wrong time. Naked and shivering in the chilly mountain air, he attempts to climb down, but slips, whacks his head on a branch, and falls into oblivion.

He wakes up inside a darkened room, crippled and disheartened, and must come to grips with the realization that he is marooned in a bleak alternate future. In this universe, what remains of the human race is trapped inside a handful of aging biodomes. With his mission failed, his world destroyed, and the one woman he loves, dead, he can find no reason to go on living.

But Lani, the emotionally scarred doctor who finds him, refuses to let him die, and as Diego heals, their relationship becomes... complicated. He struggles to let go of the past but is unable to get Isabel out of his head—or his heart. Just when it seems he may be able to find some measure of happiness in a world teetering on the edge of extinction...

Another note arrives from the future: Isabel is alive—but not for long…

To be released in just 1 month...

From award-winning author D. L. ORTON comes book three in the Between Two Evils series...

DEAD TIME

Shannon fights to stay alive inside a rogue biodome and discovers something totally unexpected... Peter. Lani is forced into the role of the reluctant heroine but rediscovers her street-kid mojo and sets out to find everything she's lost. Diego receives another dirty sock (and a note) from the poorly aimed fireball express: "The window between universes is closing." If Diego has any hope of getting back to Iz, he must get to the Magic Kingdom and power up the time machine before it's too late.

What could possibly go wrong?

The Last Star & Other Stories (REVIEW)

The Last Star

& Other Stories

Tales of Love, Loss and Laughter

Author: DL Orton
Category: Multi-genre Essays and Short Story Collection, Sci-Fi, Romance, Personal Narratives, Anthology
Suitable for: Adults Only
My Rating: 4 Stars
Format Read for Review: Paperback copy provided by the author in return for my honest review.
Pages: 152

Description: This is an anthology of short stories, essays and personal narratives. They vary in genre and elicit different emotions. This is a unique collection that's full of passion.

I will give a brief description of each short:

The Last Star
A ride that takes you to the very end of the universe and beyond. You are guided by a pair of ageless beings that contemplate what will happen next, while the last star dies. I think this story will appeal to fans of time travel genres and Doctor Who and the like.

Just Friends
A story of long-time best friends now college age who are struggling to get up the courage to confess the way they really feel about each other. Was spending spring break alone together a mistake or exactly what they needed?

Phoenix
I don't know how to describe this story without spoiling the experience of reading it. I'll just say it was a cute and fun story and it thought it was nice that it had an Afterword that promotes eco-friendly attitudes and actions, while also giving background on the story.

My Kingdom for a Double Espresso
A new couple argues after sexual rejection. A passionate, romantic short story. I wasn't very interested in their fight, but the story did have a cute ending.

Down in Flames
The most heart breaking story of the bunch. It overlays two tragedies, 911 and a couple experiencing a miscarriage. This deeply personal narrative may be gruesome and difficult for some readers and comforting to others to know they are not alone.

Willing
This is a story I never would have sought out but I found it so enjoyable. It is an amusing tale of an older woman who is relentlessly flirted with by a young, attractive man. It has the emotional ride of a rom-com (in a good way). One of my favorite stories, highly entertaining!

The Idiot's Guide to Writing Workshops
As someone who has never participated in writing workshops this one went over my head a little but I did find it comical too.

The Devil and a Hard Place
An explicit erotic short story. A complicated romance.

In Short: This diverse collection of shorts will appeal to a range of audiences and you may love all of them or only some of them. I thought this book was a fun quick read that evoked many different emotions and proved to be quite entertaining. It is also the kind of book that is perfect for times when you are busy or traveling and only have time to read a short story or two at a time.

Overall, this book is an intense, emotional and some times sensual ride.

Pros: This book is very, very well written! It is easy to get swept into the stories. I would definitely read more by this author after reading this. Different readers will have different favorites out of this collection. I liked "Willing" because I found it very amusing reading their flirty and embarrassing text messages. The writing was so good I felt the anxiety of the protagonist after she accidentally sends a message with a little more spice than she was truly brave enough to say. The story goes on a roller coaster and I really cheered her on while also empathizing with her insecurities. I really liked too that the ending of "Willing" was just left up to your imagination and not graphic. I also loved the story "The Last Star" the scientific theories were intelligently written in an approachable manner. The characters in The Last Star were very intriguing too. I wish it had been longer. All of the stories had well written characters and dialogue. I thought "Phoenix" was a really cute and sweet story and very cleverly and deceptively written. Some of the stories had Afterwords where the author shares her personal experiences

Cons: The variety of themes and genres in this book may not all be well received by all readers and the adult themes limit the book's audience. I would have liked more back story and descriptions of the characters in "The Last Star". I would have liked some more detail to the settings of the stories at times.

Parent's Guide: Some of the stories contain sexual content. This book is for adults.

This book is free with Kindle Unlimited.

Released Today - Blood Moon

New Release today, Dec. 4th, 2016:

Blood Moon

by John David Bethel

355 page Thriller
(Adult themes: violence, torture, kidnapping, murder)

Description:

On a hot, steamy afternoon in Miami, Cuban-American businessman Recidio Suarez is brutally beaten and abducted. Handcuffed, shackled and blindfolded, he has no idea why he has been targeted. What he discovers is heart-stopping. What he endures during almost a month of captivity compares only to the most horrendous stories of prisoners of war. He is tortured, and under the threat of death, and worse – the rape of his wife and torture of his children – Suarez is forced to hand over his multi-million dollar holdings to his captors.

Suarez survives and then spends the next few months staying one step ahead of the murderous pack. During this time, he and his lawyer, Nolan Stevens – a former Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Office of the FBI – are having difficulties convincing the Miami-Dade Police Department that a crime has been committed. Their efforts are complicated by Steven’s difficult history with the head of the MDPD Special Investigations Division, who is not interested in pursuing the case.

Inspired by a true story, this book features a Foreword by the only survivor of the crime and an Afterword by the Private Investigator who was instrumental in solving the case.

No More Heroes (REVIEW)

No More Heroes

Author: Roo I MacLeod
Category: Urban, Dystopian, Crime Thriller, Suspense, Vigilante Justice, Mystery, Adult Fiction
Suitable for: Adults*
My Rating: 5 Stars
Format Read for Review: E-book from the author
Pages: 346

Description: Set in a Dystopian London a homeless man named Ben becomes an unlikely protagonist as he finds himself the target of just about everyone. He was unlucky enough to have a former friend/enemy turn up and drop a bag of trouble in his lap. And now everyone wants the bag from him. So, where is the bag? And what exactly is in it anyway?

In Short: This book is an action packed crime thriller that is set in a messed up version of London that feels almost like the past set in the near future. If you like dark action books with unique stories and eccentric characters you will enjoy this book.

Pros: No More Heroes is a beautifully written book with a great story. The plot was very unique and constantly entertaining. The nonstop action had me hooked and eager to see what would happen next. The 2 missing bags with contents unknown kept me curious to the end. The settings are wonderful and detailed, you can really visualize the story unfolding. The characters are great and well developed. This book features a really interesting cast of street people and criminals. Ben the protagonist is a wonderfully complex, believable, and likeable character. He's got a bit of drinking problem but hidden behind all his misfortune is a brilliant mind that he has to constantly use to solve problem after problem that is thrown at him. It seemed like everywhere he went the sh!t hit the fan so to speak, you couldn't help feeling sorry for him but also being excited by the wild story. Ben also has some serious fighting moves, like a proper hero, and there is a clear back-story as to where they came from, which was appreciated. The characters and the story were definitely very well thought out and the ending was great. It has a good solid conclusion but also leaves you wanting to read the next book.

Cons: I have no notable issues with this book.

*Parent's Guide: Violence, murder, gore, language, and alcohol. No sex.
